Reducing Carbon Emissions

We are committed to the ambitions and climate change goals of the Paris Agreement. From a lifecycle perspective, the vast majority of emissions occur during the use phase of our products and therefore our first priority is to develop solutions that reduce the carbon emissions from transportation and machinery.

Energy-efficient products and solutions mean significant savings for our customers and, at the same time, better environmental performance and less climate impact. Already today, we offer leading, fossil free alternatives such as zero emission vehicles in our core segments. While numbers of sold electric vehicles are small today compared with traditional combustion drivelines, this transition to low carbon transport and infrastructure is on-going and will increase rapidly. Our ambition is reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

Clean Transport Solutions

Electric and hydrogen powered offer

Fully electric products have the potential to emit close to zero greenhouse gases in the use phase, but this depends on the access to electricity from clean sources and relies on a rapid expansion of the current charging infrastructure. The electric drive trains use energy coming either from batteries or by converting hydrogen on board into electricity. We have set the ambition to have at least 35% fully electric vehicles sales by 2030.

For trucks with heavy loads and on long distances, hydrogen is a highly interesting alternative to reduce carbon emissions. Our goal is to offer heavy-duty vehicles with fuel cells for demanding long-haul applications in series production in the second half of the decade. With the ambition of becoming a leading global manufacturer of fuel-cell systems, the Volvo Group and Daimler Truck AG launch of new joint venture cellcentric in Europe, with operation planned to commence in 2025.

Enable customers to go fossil free

We want to enable our customers to run our zero emission vehicles and products on 100% fossil free energy. We believe this is achievable with strong stakeholder cooperation. We will intensify our collaborations across industry, with supply chain partners, customers, cities, governments and academia to increase the speed at which fossil free, competitive, clean transportation solutions can be deployed at scale.

Below you can find a few recent collaborations we are part of:

  • H2Accelerate is in industry collaboration focusing on creating the conditions for the mass-market roll-out of hydrogen trucks in Europe.
  • Energy Transition Commission is a global coalition from across the energy landscape committed to achieving net-zero emissions by mid-century.

SBTi – Interim targets leading the way to net-zero

Our interim targets are covering approximately 95% of group emissions coming mainly from use of sold products. The Volvo Group is targeting net-zero in 2040 in order to reach a rolling fleet net-zero value chain emissions by 2050 (considering the products average time ”on the road” is approx. 10 years). The ambitious goals set for Scope 3 is leading us the way to keep global warming below 1.5⁰C above pre-industrial levels. CO2 reduction targets with 2019 as baseline:

  • Trucks -40% reduction per vehicle km by 2030
  • Buses -40% reduction per vehicle km by 2030
  • Volvo CE -30% in absolute reductions by 2030
  • Volvo Penta -37,5% in absolute reductions by 2034

Alternative fuels

Powered by alternative fuels such as sustainable biofuels and hydrogen, the combustion engine will continue to play a significant role for our customers’ ability in reducing carbon emissions (CO2). We will continue to improve the efficiency of existing technology and we have high expectations for the use of renewable fuels derived from vegetable or organic origin in regions where sustainable supply can be provided. The sustainable aspect is important to avoid adverse effects on biodiversity, food-security etc.
